With an enviable location in the heart of the country, there is so much you could do during a stay at The Dutch Barn. Whether you are looking for a relaxing rural stay or an action-packed trip, the options are almost endless! Some of our favourite places and local highlights are…
The famous racetrack offers track days and events throughout the year. Silverstone Circuit has also recently opened a new interactive museum. An absolute must for anyone interested in F1 or Moto GP! www.silverstone.co.uk
Set amongst the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, this 60-acre privately owned woodland garden contains a large and notable collection of plants. A gem of a place with a lovely café. www.evenleywoodgarden.co.uk
We are incredibly lucky to have several stunning National Trust properties and gardens all with a short drive of The Dutch Barn. Ashridge Estate, Cannons Ashby, Claydon Estate and Ascott House are all well worth a visit but two of our particular favourites are:
Gardening on the grandest scale in this Georgian landscape garden and park. The sheer size and space is perfect for those who love the outdoors and enjoy walking. As you enter the gardens, another world awaits! www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stowe
A Rothschild House and Garden. This impressive French Renaissance-style Chateau is set amongst beautiful grounds, featuring a wonderful woodland playground and an unusual bird aviary. A magical way to spend a day! www.nationaltrust.org.uk/waddesdon
At 233m above sea level, Ivinghoe Beacon is a prominent landmark in the Chiltern Hills, Buckinghamshire. It is the starting point of the Icknield Way to the east and the Ridgeway long-distance path to the west. This is a popular spot for walkers and sightseers. Model aircraft enthusiasts also use the lift generated by the wind blowing up the hill to fly their unpowered aircraft – great fun to watch!
The 35 acres of extensive gardens are a combination of several styles, including the romantic Italian Gardens, impressive Orangery, and beautiful Arboretum. The full Castle Ashby experience also includes a menagerie, children’s play area, plant centre, tea room and gift shop. www.castleashbygardens.co.uk
Run by Forestry England, Salcey Forest is an oasis of nature and history. This magnificent woodland has many miles of ancient wood banks, building remains and ancient trees. There are endless walking trails, a family cycling trail, adventure play area and an onsite café. www.forestryengland.uk/salcey-forest
Another Forestry England gem, Wendover woods is a little further to drive to but well worth the effort. Situated in the beautiful surroundings of the Chilterns, Wendover Woods is home to stunning trails and picturesque views.
If you’re feeling energetic, why not try the Go-Ape Tree Top Adventure, Gruffalo orienteering, the fitness trail assault course or the brand new play trail. Or relax in the woods with a stroll on one of the many walks. The new cafe offers hot and cold food and drinks with fantastic views across the forest and the Chilterns. www.forestryengland.uk/wendover-woods
